Reverse Thinking Your Goals
Copyright 2003-2004 by Neil Schearing
[This week I have included an excellent article by my friend Neil Shearing. Neil did such a great job of reverse-thinking the goal setting process I asked for special permission to offer this to you here. - Kevin]
Psst! Wanna make a million bucks???
It's easy. Set up a website. Sell a product. Get RICH!
Yippee! We're all millionaires. :-)
It sounds crazy, doesn't it? We all know making money
online (or anywhere else) isn't as easy as I've just
made it sound.
It's just like buying a lottery ticket at the same time
as the guy next to you, turning to him and saying,
"I'm sure we'll both hit the jackpot this week!".
Instead of thinking in vague generalities about making
"millions", let's try a little backwards math.
Believe me, you don't need advance calculus. This is
easy... but VITAL if you really want to succeed online.
Ready?
OK. Here goes...
1: Decide right now how much money you need to make per
year to be happy. How much? In dollars and cents. Write
it down. Let's say it's $100,000.
2: Work out your profit per ebook. Let's say your product
sells for $97 and your profit is $30 (after deducting
affiliate commissions, order processing fees, overheads
etc).
3: Divide one number by the other. 100,000/30 = 3333
You need to sell 3333 copies per year. That's 64 per
week, or about nine per day.
4: Selling nine copies per day with a conversion
rate of 1% means you need 900 visitors per day.
See the power of the math?
You need to find 900 visitors per day to make $100,000
per year from that ebook.
If you want to really have fun with this, play with
the numbers.
If your new software costs $997 and your profit is $300,
you'd need only 90 visitors per day (assuming the 1%
conversion remains)
Or what if you had ten products all generating $30
profit from a 1% conversion ratio? Then you'd need 90
visitors per day to each site.
What if you want to make $1,000,000 instead? You'd
need ten time the traffic for any of the above
scenarios...
Is it do-able?
Absolutely. Once the math is done, you just have to
build the traffic stream and meet your goals. :-)
