Why Your Site Isn’t Making Money

If you are not making money from your website, life can be a little frustrating. After all we are in business to make money, not spend it.

But how can you know what needs to be fixed? Here are some simple keys.

The three main variables you need to look at with any site are traffic, sales and returns. That’s really it. You either have traffic or you don’t. You either have sales or you don’t. Once you make those sales, you either get a reasonable number of returns or you don’t.

This means there are really three possible situations with any website (or a combination of the three):

1. Not enough traffic.
2. Not enough sales from the traffic.
3. Too many returns.

If you aren’t getting traffic to your SALES page, you aren’t going to make any money. Period. Traffic is the first characteristic to consider when diagnosing your site.

Once people get to your sales page, do they buy? This is the second characteristic. If you are getting solid traffic but no sales, this is your problem.

Once people buy, are the sales “sticking”? If you are getting excessive returns you are going to have trouble making a profit. If your returns are above 10% for a digital product or 5% for a “hard” good, then you have a problem with too many returns.

Got one of these problems? I have put together a group of resources to help you figure out how to fix them. You can look at them here:
