Let’s face it, life can be more than a little discouraging
at times.
If you are going to experience success in any area of life, we must develop the ability to recognize and overcome discouragement. Without that ability we give up far to easily, sometimes just inches from success. The real key to success is having a compelling reason WHY we must achieve the goal we are pursuing. Everyone wants to have a happy family, a fit and attractive body, a solid financial portfolio. Yet, despite the fact almost everyone can have all these and more, most people will never take the simple actions necessary to see that happen. The answer is often very simple: They don’t have a compelling reason “why” they must take the action. My friend Jerry is pretty average in many ways. At 55 and 50 pounds overweight, he had “tried” to lose weight for years, but always ended up putting on just a “few more pounds.” His heart attack changed all that. After being told to shape up “or else”, Jerry suddenly found the will power to hit the gym, follow the diet, lose the weight. Now, at 60, he is a picture of the fit senior—and healthier than he was in his 40’s. While not all reasons for achieving a goal are as “life or death” as Jerry’s, they can still be very compelling. Here is a thirty-minute exercise that might just change your life: Take out a clean sheet of paper, and write out the top five or six things you want to accomplish. The things that come to mind first. Now, go back and for each one of those, identify all of the reasons “why” you want to accomplish that particular goal. Take a few minutes each day to focus on the reward—the reason WHY you are pursing those things. The work won’t seem as tough, the adversity won’t seem as devastating. And you are much more likely to achieve your goals.
